February Fixtures

Hello subscriber,

Good Food and Horse Racing

Travelling the world in the comfort of the Tally is proving a popular activity for the cold winter evenings – this month America, Greece and Germany are the culinary destinations. No need to pack your suitcase – just come on down on a Friday or Saturday. If you like your food more traditional, the normal menu is always available. And the Valentine’s Day menu is so good, we decided to offer it on the following day too, for those who couldn't get a table on the night (or who just want good food without the romance!).

For a fun night out, come along to An Evening of Horse Racing – choose your horse and watch the race on the big screen.

More details in Dates for your Diary below, and on our website's What's on page.

Dartmoor Ale Trail and praise from CAMRA

The Tally has been selected by Dartmoor Accommodation for inclusion in their newly launched Dartmoor Real Ale Trail featuring over 35 pubs on and around the moor. Brains behind the trail, Lisa Jenkins, said "We know from people using our website that there is a thirst for information about good beer pubs in the area. Often tucked away off the beaten track, these can be hard to find so we felt a map, or Ale Trail, would be a great way of solving this problem. From the dramatic high tors in the north, to the softer more rolling landscape in the south, this Real Ale Trail will help you seek out the delights of traditional real ales and good hostelries in this beautiful area." So we can expect to welcome some curious visitors.

Another boost to custom should come from a very favourable review in this quarter’s BEER magazine from CAMRA (see Press cuttings on our website). In an article on community pubs, food writer Susan Nowak praised the selection of ales and range of food. She pointed out that as Littlehempston was so small, the Tally needed to be a "destination pub" drawing in customers from a wide area. Which is exactly what the management committee and Ian and Kim are working on at the moment. All ideas are welcome!

Farewells

Sadly we're saying goodbye to two lovely barmen this coming week. Charlie Taylor who has been a familiar and welcoming face behind the bar since last May is off to do his "proper job" in international development work, taking up the post of Country Director for an aid agency in Ghana - his task is to kick start a project aimed at relieving extreme poverty. Among his many previous jobs, he’s worked in Kenya, Rajasthan and, his favourite, Papua New Guinea. Good luck with everything, Charlie, and thank you!

Also leaving is Alex Tredinnick, who's been helping out pulling pints since before Xmas. He's bidding farewell to his Littlehempston family and returning to Brisbane, Australia. One lofty ambition is to train as a pilot. Good luck, Alex!

Support needed

Please spread the word that we are looking for a cleaner for one hour in the mornings, 4 or 5 days a week. This will be paid work and would suit somebody local. And in the meantime, if anybody could volunteer a morning to help out, that would be very much appreciated - marigolds and full training provided!
